Sketchup software allows me to take a 2D plan and efficiently translate it into a 3D model where you can virtually walk through the model and look around. This helps to understand sight lines and the interplay of various heights of vegetation with your house, decks, patios, etc. It can also simulate how shadows are cast during the day, which can be important for plant selection and placement of larger items such as trees, pool umbrellas or pergolas.

However, 3D design is more time intensive, and so it may be both unnecessary and out of budget for smaller applications.  Many of my customers find that 2D plans are sufficient for their needs.
